Contraindications of cacao

While cacao is generally safe and offers numerous benefits, there are some contraindications and precautions to be aware of, especially when consumed in higher doses, such as in ceremonial or therapeutic settings:

1. Heart Conditions

  • Reason: Cacao contains theobromine, a stimulant that can increase heart rate and blood pressure. People with heart conditions, arrhythmias, or high blood pressure should consult a healthcare professional before consuming large amounts of cacao.

2. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

  • Reason: Theobromine, caffeine, and other compounds in cacao can cross the placenta and affect the fetus, or be passed through breast milk. Although moderate consumption is usually considered safe, excessive intake should be avoided.

3. Medications

  • Antidepressants (SSRIs and MAOIs): Cacao contains high levels of tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin. When combined with SSRIs or MAOIs, it may cause an excess of serotonin, leading to serotonin syndrome, a potentially dangerous condition.

  • Blood Pressure Medications: Due to its ability to lower blood pressure, cacao could enhance the effects of antihypertensive drugs, potentially leading to too low blood pressure.

  • Stimulants: Cacao’s stimulant properties could amplify the effects of medications or substances like caffeine or amphetamines.

4. Sensitivity to Caffeine or Theobromine

  • Reason: Some individuals are particularly sensitive to stimulants like theobromine and caffeine, leading to jitteriness, anxiety, or sleep disturbances after consuming cacao.

5. Migraines

  • Reason: Cacao contains tyramine and phenylethylamine, compounds that can trigger migraines in susceptible individuals.

6. Gastrointestinal Sensitivity

  • Reason: In some people, cacao can cause digestive upset, such as nausea, diarrhea, or acid reflux, particularly when consumed in large quantities.

7. Kidney Stones

  • Reason: Cacao contains oxalates, which may contribute to the formation of kidney stones in individuals prone to this condition.

8. Allergies

  • Reason: Although rare, some individuals may have an allergy to cacao, which could result in symptoms like hives, swelling, or respiratory issues.

In general, moderate consumption of cacao is safe for most people, but if you have any pre-existing health conditions or are on medication, it’s best to consult with a healthcare provider before consuming large quantities of cacao, especially in ceremonial settings.
